Disney has quietly removed “Avatar” from Disney+ worldwide, without any prior notification. No official reason was provided by Disney or 20th Century Studios, though the timing is certainly suspicious.
Disney announced that ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water, it would be re-releasing the original “Avatar” in theatres on September 23, 2022.
Released in 2009, Avatar still stands as the highest-grossing movie of all time, raking in a total of $2.8 billion at the worldwide box office. The film takes place on the lush alien world of Pandora.
Disney made the move almost certainly made in an attempt to lure more people out to theaters to relive the 2009 blockbuster and boost Avatar’s worldwide box office totals once more. Avatar’s availability on Disney+ would have led the viewers to re-watch it on their home screens.
Avatar: The Way of Water, is scheduled to debut later this year on December 16. The sequel is set more than a decade after the events of the first film and follows the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids) and the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.
