Disney has announced that the Matterhorn Bobsleds will reopen on October 14, 2022. Disneyland’s classic attraction has been closed since August 8 for refurbishment.
Matterhorn Bobsleds opened on June 14, 1959 at Disneyland in Anaheim, California as part of the first major expansion of the park, which also included the Disneyland Monorail, Submarine Voyage, Fantasyland Autopia and the Motor Boat Cruise.
The roller coaster is modeled after the Matterhorn, a mountain in the Swiss Alps. While on location in Switzerland for the filming of the movie in 1958, Walt Disney mailed his Imagineers a postcard of the Matterhorn mountain with two words scrawled across the back: “Build this!”
Matterhorn Bobsleds is the first tubular steel continuous track rollercoaster ever constructed and is a ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts) Coaster Landmark. The development of the ride by the ridemaker that would become known as Arrow Dynamics launched the modern roller coaster industry with its gravity-defying loops, twists and inversions.
