Disney is set to launch a new trading card game and has partnered with Ravensburger, a 139-year-old game publisher. The new joint effort is called Disney Lorcana, and is expected in the latter half of 2023.
Disney’s head of games Cassidy Werner described the upcoming trading card game as something that will feature a “modern storybook” art style, noting inspirations from the “storybook openings of classic Disney films and features visible line work and vibrant color washes,” as well as the combination of “traditional hand-drawn qualities seen in fairy-tale storybooks with new digital techniques.”
Ravensburger already works with Disney in their popular Disney-themed strategy board games, called Disney Villainous. The game allows you to take on the role of a Disney villain and strive to achieve your own devious objective. That series began in 2018 and now contains nearly 30 villains from all across the Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars universes.
Ravensburger CEO Filip Francke spoke about the big-picture implications of the partnership. “This game is probably the largest potential that Ravensburger has ever gone after,” Francke said, “and hence also probably the largest investment that we have ever done into any type of project and initiative.”
The actual gameplay of the game had not yet been given, though the game’s basic idea revolves around the “treasury” of all Disney songs, stories, and characters, known as “The Great Illuminary.”
Fans may get a chance to have their first glimpse of Disney Lorcana in the upcoming D23 expo which will begin this Sept. 9, in Anaheim, California.
