Disney has announced that ‘Lightyear’ will be available on Disney+ starting August 3rd.
The film did not match the success of its predecessors in the Toy Story universe at the Box Office. The movie has only grossed about $115 million in U.S. theaters and $213 million worldwide, making it the second-lowest grossing movie in Pixar’s long history.
Lightyear’s underwhelming box office is due in part to poor viewer reviews and controversy over a same-sex kiss, which resulted in many people refusing to support the film and it being banned in no less than 14 Middle Eastern and Asian countries.
Lightyear is a sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear produced by Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Pictures.
The film is not a story about the Toy Story action figure, but the origin of the in-universe astronaut who inspired the cartoon and toy. It follows the legendary Space Ranger on an intergalactic adventure alongside a group of ambitious recruits and his robot companion Sox.
