‘Lightyear’ Hits Disney Plus This Week

Pixar and Disney’s newest film, “Lightyear” will release on its streaming platform Disney+ on Aug. 3.

Lightyear is a sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear. The film is not a story about the Toy Story action figure, but the origin of the in-universe astronaut who inspired the cartoon and toy. It follows the legendary Buzz (voiced by Chris Evans) and his crew embark on an intergalactic adventure only to find themselves lost in space 4.2 million lightyears from Earth.

Directed by Angus MacLane, and written by MacLane and Jason Headley, Lightyear was first released in theaters on June 17.

Lightyear was the first Pixar movie since “Onward” in 2020 to have a theatrical-only release, opening No. 2 at the box office its first weekend. The film struggled with theater attendances and did not match the success of its predecessors in the Toy Story universe at the Box Office. The movie has only grossed a little over $115 million in U.S. theaters and $213 million worldwide, making it the second-lowest grossing movie in Pixar’s long history.
